Catching Up

Well, the snow is gone except in the deepest shadows and I truly ended up in bed under the electric blanket for the duration!

There's been some kind of virus going around and it utterly slammed me from Tuesday night until Friday. I normally don't get sick so it was a real surprise to say the least.

Anyway, I'm back and trying to make up for lost time!

I'm glad I didn't get the pukey kind, mine was like a regular old cold but a terrible cough to go with it. Been going on for more than 2 weeks. But at least I'm down to the dumb hacking. Joe said it was a habit now.... That wasn't nice...
Glad you are feeling better and really glad you had your linus blanket.....

Hi Jan, so glad to hear you are feeling better!

I wanted to comment on you post about how we learn (but I had to stay away from blogging as I was doing that evil filing - oh and the offer of warmth and hot chocolate sounds wonderful but for the sake of my sanity, I must decline the opportunity to do more filing! Thanks though!!)

Don't give up on finding the right teacher or the right methodology. I teach and I take my responsibility very seriously. It is my job to break down the information into incremental steps and to create exercises that will facilitate learning. You should expect this, not some undefined, 'you will learn as we go along' approach. Do ask how the teacher will impart knowledge. They should be able to give you a clear idea of what to expect in a class. Make the teacher accountable. If you don't understand something, ask until you get an explanation that is clear to you.

I have a pet peeve regarding artists who teach but who are too lazy or too busy to put together detailed lesson plans and instructions. My students deserve everything I can give them. I always provide detailed step by step instructions for all of the class projects - in case someone doesn't get finished or in case they would like to redo it once at home.

Unfortunately there are a lot of wanna be teachers out there but they don't have a clue as to what they are doing. But they are happy to take your money. Also, there are way too many bad art instruction books. Keep sifting through the mess. You will find a good instructor because they do exist. It just may take a bit of time.

Good luck and stay on the mend!
