Shawnee Update - German Shepherd Dog Acrylic Portrait

This is the latest update on the portrait of Shawnee, the German Shepherd Dog.  I'm still blocking in color and it seems to be going slowly because I'm trying to build layers.  With pastel, you can immediately go over the top of previously put down color, but with acrylic, you must wait for it to dry.  It doesn't take long but is just different from the way I usually work.

Shawnee had a lovely buff colored undercoat that I really want to get down right as bits of it will show through the succeeding layers when I begin to build the silver and black colors of her top coat.

Soon I'll begin to texturize her coat so that all the subtle colors will work together to make her fur seem touchable and real.

A long way to go still but it's getting there!

Comparing it with the last update you've made a lot of progress and I know its going to be stunning once you get to the stage where you add all the fine detail.

What support are you using and did you colour it yourself?

Thanks so much, Sue. I'm using an Ampersand Claybord as the support and yes, I colored it myself but I think the color will be adjusted as I go. The owner wanted a cheery background color and gave me the sample colors she wanted. When I get closer to the finish, I'll email her to be sure she still wants these colors (you may not be able to see it, but there are different shades subtly swirled in the background). I hope to make more progress tomorrow. It's been rainy and dreary here and really hard to judge the colors sometimes.
Thanks for stopping by.

Coming along great Jan. I can't wait to see the next update.
It's interesting to watch as I have never used Acrylic paint.

Hope your well...Hugs. xx

Thanks Doreen. Acrylic paints are different from other media that's for sure. I think I would like them more if I weren't so used to the immediacy of pastel. Well, it's not that I don't like them, it's just that they're different. I'm sure you would do well with them and maybe one day you'll try them.

I hope to get more done today - the rain is gone and I hope it will be sunny today!

Gosh, you're so patient, Jan! I've about given layers up... lol! I think I'm more toward the Alla Prima end of painting (either that or I'm just plain lazy ;-)

I'll admit that it's very time-consuming to paint in layers but ends up worth it usually. And I don't mind it with pastel.

But you have to do some layers to paint in W/C, Teresa, and I know you do layers with CP! I think they're sort of unavoidable even with graphite drawings! Seems you just gotta keep layering to get that richness of tone in just about any medium.
